Oximeter Types

A pulse oximeter is a device invented by Milliken in the 1940s. This is engineered to measure the oxygen saturation in the hemoglobin. The pulse oximeter is very constantly used to patients suffering from asthma, COPD, and many respiratory conditions. Through the help of a pulse oximeter, heart rate and oxygen are monitored if it is in a stable and normal condition.

Biologically speaking, the blood of a human being will show a bright red color when the oxygen concentration is high, while blood with low concentration of oxygen will tend to have a darker color. This color fact is what the pulse oximeter exploits.

To this day, there are a variety of types of pulse oximeters. There are those heavy-duty models used in the hospitals while there are portable types for home use. The large units are basically found in hospitals. While there are two types of portable pulse oximeters that can be used at home.

First is the handheld pulse oximeter. The handheld oximeters are the ones that basically involve the use of a probe. This probe is attached to a unit using a special cord. When in use, the probe is placed to the patient’s earlobe or finger. As you switch on the device, it immediately starts assessing. The display screen of the unit will show the device’s readings.

Also, some of these machines are featured with printers as you have the option whether to print it out or not. Most of pulse oximeter units also have built-in memory. With that feature, you can check the past or previous readings of your results. The handheld pulse oximeter may be a little expensive for home use. The cheapest type cost around $500. Major manufacturers such as BCI/Smith medical, Nonin and SPO have these types.

Another type of portable oximeter is the fingertip pulse oximeter. This is the most commonly used type for home use. It is light and portable. This works as you put your finger on and turn the oximeter on. The saturation levels and the pulse rate are displayed on a display screen after a few seconds.

Fingertip oximeters are quite cost-efficient as compared to the handheld oximeter. They can be bought at only less than $200 the cheapest. It is easy to store in a pocket or purse.

You will need to do a research to get the right model of the fingertip pulse oximeter that will be ideal for you if intending to buy for home usage.  You may need to seek advice from a qualified medical doctor in case you find it difficult to decide.
